I think that regarding this issue I should refer to Bug #711561 - Compiz won't allow Desktop Cube plugin to load with unity (https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/711561) . I have also found the article specifying how to manually fix the problem I experience : http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/04/compiz-cube-natty/ and I will follow the instructions there.
