i don't know if this will help but i just added a new user (already had root and my current user) via users-admin and it basically wiped my /etc/group file. it had 2 lines left in it. luckily i was able to boot in recovery mode and copy the backup at /var/backup/group.bak so that i could boot correctly. I'm still having some other odd errors since my recovery, but that's for a different thread.

I found out about the group backup file from http:// ubuntuforums. org/archive/ index.php/ t-1083487. html and he seems to be having the same problem. I'm running ubuntu 9.04 (jaunty) 64 bit.
