Suggestion for measuring with cold cache:

# first, drop all caches
echo 3 | sudo tee /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches
# restart gnome-panel and nautilus to reload most of GNOME/gvfs/GTK/libc/etc bits back into cache:
nautilus -q
setsid gnome-panel --replace
