A comment to the "add yourself to audio group, as temporary workaround". Both users of this computer are members of the "audio" group, but only one has a sound output device listed in the sound preferences dialog.
/var/log/user.log also has several error messages from pulseaudio, for example "pulseaudio[6227]: module-x11-xsmp.c: X11 session manager not running."
