@juergh - apologies - I've diagnosed my boot freeze issue - it was a power supply issue. Changing to a brand new supply makes the boot work. KMS must have just tipped the voltage available.

The good news is that installing the 6 debs from the test kernel no longer causes freezes. So congrats on resolving this.
