Quick test done:

root@fpgrpi:~# uname -a

Tested dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d on both wayland and X11 with no HDMI freezes at all. I'll have it keep running (on wayland) to make sure, but this fix seems to be really promising. Thanks.
