what is preventing the patch from #63 to be implemented? I am no grub wizard by a long shot, but the patch looks sane.

And I have to correct myself. When I spoke in #79, I had /boot on a separate ext4 partition so it would not be surprising that I did not run into this. I've now made a fresh bionic installation entirely on btrfs and I ran into this almost decade-old bug.
