Hah, that explains a lot, thanks for the research. I added this bit to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingRemovableDevices, so that we can quickly
identify this problem for other people.

Do you have any idea what could have broken the group memberships of the 'hal'
user? Did it work until your Breezy upgrade and immediately broke after upgrading?
