Default applications for ToriOS

Registered by Israel Dahl

We need to decide all the default apps to include. So far the two major ones DE (JWM) and filemanager(Rox) are chosen for their lightweight nature and low memory footprint. The user can of course install other filemanagers, etc... and we should plan on allowing this option, and plan on this.

We need to decide what apps to include by default (do we want an office program like abiword?)
What network applet to use (wicd or nm-applet?)
power manager?
default text editor?
system monitor (lubuntu task manager or htop, or other?)
etc...

Whiteboard

[israeldahl]
This is the discussion board for default applications.
We need to decide what applications we need to include, and what applications we want to include as extras.
Lubuntu is a very decent starting point for lightweight applications, though we need some lighter applications.
We will need to pre-configure Rox to handle the mime-types using our defaults for specific formats.

Here are some proposals:

images - imagemagick very lightweight image viewer and screen shot utility. Also very robust for manipulating images to convert them from various formats.

text - I'd like a text editor with syntax highlighting, because those are the most useful. Geany is great, but possibly too much for a text editor. mouse/leafpad are nice light apps that are fine for most people... though anymore a text editor is rather pointless unless it has syntax highlighting. people either write notes (tomboy? or something similar) or documents (abiword?) so a text editor is only good for short text or configuiration files.

web apps from chrome could replace a lot of things and allow for a wide range of applications to be easily browsed and installed (making it like a chromebook)... just a thought.

games? ace-of-penguins is nice

internet - ff or chromium or Qupzilla are my votes. Qupzilla is extremely fast (though it is Qt). E-mail? Should we add links (gmail, yahoo, etc...) instead of an e-mail client program? We can add a menu item or launchers for this

Please add suggestions!!!
