Registered by Bogdan Marinov

Support for the NMEA 0183 standard for serial communication with GPS devices.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NMEA_0183

The standard itself is proprietary, but according to the Wikipedia article, it has been reverse-engineered to a degree and there are free implementations, such as gpsd:

Whiteboard

The GPSD daemon seems to be standard on Linux, available on Mac, and also Android. Its author has no interst whatever to make it available on Windows, though.
libgps allows queries of gpsd also on other systems. Maybe even via bluetooth (TODO: Find out how this would work on Bluetooth.) Scenario: Ask your smartphone's GPS.
On Windows, Qt5.2 brought NMEA support. We can query a directly attached device.
