Create some multi-resolution images of sky surveys for display as background

Registered by Fabien Chéreau

Stellarium already has the code needed to display multi-resolution sky images (in StelSkyImageTile) but lacks data and hosting servers. The plan is to buy/find some servers on which to store the large images collection like the DSS surveys or other surveys as it is done e.g. in WWT, Google Sky. A good source of data is the SkyView web site (http://skyview.gsfc.nasa.gov/).

The task would be to obtain the survey data, pre-process it using scripts to generate the tiles and index files and upload it to our servers. See doc about the JSON index format here: http://groups.google.com/group/astronomex/web/multi-resolution-image-webservice

Skills needed: Script language (some code already exists in python), Image processing, Astronomy processing
