End-to-end encryption would make messages between a user and a contact unreadable even to routing servers. This can be developed in two stages, with essential features being described in the Simplified Encrypted Session Negotiation (http://www.xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0116.html) and extra features in Encrypted Session Negotiation (http://www.xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0217.html).
