HBASE_CLIENT

*A Note on HBase*

The focus of the Savanna project is to enable and deploy tooling and infrastructure related to Big Data Processing. As such the project specifically targets Hadoop and its broader ecosystem of tools that are necessary for enabling this function. Big data processing relies on a variety of tools and techniques for analyzing massive amounts of data. First and foremost, this includes the deployment of a massively scalable distributed file system [HDFS], which many tools depend on, including Map Reduce, Pig, Hive, HBase etc.

The question has been raised whether or not it is within Savanna’s purview to manage deployments of HBase. In short, HBase is one of the tools that are part and parcel of the Hadoop ecosystem. HBase is dependent on Zookeeper and HDFS both of which are managed and deployed by Savanna. The close ties of Hadoop and HBase is further evidenced by the fact that all Hadoop vendors (Hortonworks, Cloudera, MapR, Intel and IBM) include HBase as a part of their distributions. Not including HBase support in Savanna creates an artificial separation of concerns diverging from the primary use case of Hadoop which offers HBase as a supporting mechanism for Big Data Processing and analysis.
