Whiteboard

It would be best to create a logo that can easily be turned into a 16x16 pixel favicon (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Favicon).

To do so, you can start by opening public/images/headerbg.svg in Inkscape to experiment in that file a little. Inkscape is a vector graphics editor rather than a raster/pixel editor (like Gimp and Photoshop), which means from one original it can export images in many sizes where all the lines, borders, shadows, and gradients remain crisp. .svg files are "Scalable Vector Graphics" files, so you can scale them to any size and they still look good, which is not possible with pixel-based graphics file formats. So there is some value in learning how to create the new graphic in Inkscape or another vector graphics editor (I think Adobe Illustrator is one) rather than in Gimp or Photoshop.

To plan a new graphic, it's wise to think of some themes, ideas, and words that are characteristic of reformed churches and the "Reformed Churches Locator" software we're writing, then try to find shapes or pictures that readily communicate those ideas, and colors (warm, soft, cold, bold, coordinating, contrasting, etc.) that facilitate that communication. You could simply arrange the words "Reformed Churches Locator" in a graphic in an attractive way, like http://www.modernreformation.org, http://opc.org or http://caneyopc.org. http://sovereigngracesingles.com uses a picture of John Calvin, because he so greatly influenced the Protestant Reformation and so his picture is well known among Reformed Christians. Or you could create an icon-style shape like http://wts.edu.

Symbols related to the reformed faith:

Tulip - acronym for the 5 points of Calvinism
Scottish flag
Calvin's logo - "my heart I offer, promptly and sincerely"
Burning bush - on New Geneva Study Bible
A picture of the statues of the four magisterial reformers in Geneva, Switzerland - http://reformedphilosophy.files.wordpress.com/2008/04/reformation-wall.jpg
Greyfriar's
The shield of The House of Orange

Some shapes that relate to "locating" are:

map
compass
GPS
bull's-eye
finger pointing on a map
arrow

General Christian symbols:

trinitarian symbols
fish
cross with a small circle around the center point of the cross
alpha and omega
