@John,
as the bug description was about the 12.04 libreoffice build, i'm actually using a raring host with 1.4.0 qemu-user-static, with a *precise* armhf container. The precise libreoffice has been building all day friday and friday so far with no incidents.
In a raring chroot, I've not been able to get past the javac crash. Once I'm sure the precise package builds, I intend to do some printf debugging to get past the javac crash.
