Support Python 2.3

First of all, break a dependency on fixture. This library doesn't work with 2.3 and since we use it only for setting up temporary directories, it will be easy to roll our own code for that.
After that make all the tests pass on Python 2.3.
Finally do some manual testing to make sure we're not missing anything obvious.
