PureData - real-time graphical programming environment for audio, video, and graphical processing. It is the third major branch of the family of patcher programming languages known as Max (Max/FTS, ISPW Max, Max/MSP, jMax, etc.) originally developed by Miller Puckette and company at IRCAM. The core of Pd is written and maintained by Miller Puckette and includes the work of many developers, making the whole package very much a community effort.
Metisse - X-based window system designed with two goals in mind. First, it should make it easy for HCI researchers to design and implement innovative window management techniques Second, it should conform to existing standards and be robust and efficient enough to be used on a daily basis, making it a suitable platform for the evaluation of the proposed techniques. Metisse is not focused on a particular kind of interaction (e.g. 3D) and should not be seen as a new desktop proposal. It is rather a tool for creating new types of desktop environments.
Pspi - GIMP plug-in that runs 3rd-party Photoshop plug-in filters. I wrote it in 2001, and it initially worked on Windows only. Then nothing much happened until now (March 2006) when it became available also on Linux. All that was needed, basically, was for somebody to try building it using winegcc. Possibly building and running it on Linux might have worked already years ago, but nobody tried... Thanks to Mukund for trying it on Linux and reporting the success!
Resynthesizer - Gimp plug-in for texture synthesis. Given a sample of a texture, it can create more of that texture. This has a surprising number of uses:
DBP - simple batch processing plugin for the Gimp - it allows the user to automatically perform operations (such as resize) on a collection of image files. Its main advantage is that the user does not have to learn a scripting language. Like the Gimp itself, DBP relies on a graphical interface. The user creates a list of images, and sets up the processing required for each image. The results of the current settings can be displayed. Once the required sequence of operations has been set up, DBP performs the same processing on each image in turn. The images can be colour corrected, resized, cropped, and sharpened, then renamed and saved to a different file in a specified image format. All the steps (except loading and saving the image!) are optional; so the simplest use of DBP is just to convert a number of image files from one format to another.
Lazarus - IDE stable and featuring rich visual programming environment for the FreePascal Compiler. It supports the creation of self-standing graphical and console applications and runs on Linux, FreeBSD, MacOSX and Windows.
Jahshaka - The worlds first OpenSource Realtime Media Playback and Visual Effects System. Jahshaka takes advantage of the power of OpenGL and the openlibraries.
DBN - Design By Numbers was created for visual designers and artists as an introduction to computational design. It is the result of a continuing endeavor by Professor John Maeda to teach the “idea” of computation to designers and artists. It is his belief that the quality of media art and design can only improve through establishing educational infrastructure in arts and technology schools that create strong, cross-disciplinary individuals.
FBZX - Sinclair Spectrum emulator, designed to work at full screen using the FrameBuffer, which emulates acurately the Original spectrum (both issue 2 and issue 3), the classic 128K, the Amstrad Plus 2 and the Amstrad Plus 2A. This include screen, keyboard and sound (both speaker and AY-3-8912 chip).
NeverGreen is a computer game written in C# (although some scripting between modules may be handled in Python). It is a tongue-in-cheek game that hearkens back to the earlier days of console game entertainment and classic games such as Might & Magic and The Bard's Tale. Using images to help the player determine orientation, we can allow them to manipulate the progress of an avatar across a virtual “Red Square.” Players will be able to explore a variety of locations, generated from digital photos of the actual square, rendered through graphics programs to create a more dramatic mood.
Music Player Daemon (MPD) allows remote access for playing music (MP3, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, AAC, Mod, and wave files) and managing playlists. MPD is designed for integrating a computer into a stereo system that provides control for music playback over a local network. It also makes a great desktop music player, especially if you are a console junkie, like frontend options, or restart X often.

SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) and SIP Servlets are behind many popular services we enjoy today, like Voice-over-IP (VoIP) phone service, instant messaging, presence and buddy list management and web conferencing. SIP Servlets are going to play an even bigger part in building the next generation of Telecommunications services. SailFin adds SIP Servlets technology extension to GlassFish Application Server.
Audacity is free, open source software for recording and editing sounds. It is available for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems.
The main goal of the insomnia project is to establish a competent developer network for open source solutions. Every member of the network can post a problem he/she is aware of. If the post gets enough attention from other developers, a brainstorming session accross the whole network will take place. Thereby we seek to benefit from synergetic effects. After that, the results are reviewed and a roadmap for the targeted solution is defined. A feature based developement model is then used which enables us to reduce the communication overhead up to the minimum.
Xpm Manager - GUI to manage XMP metadatas on GNU/Linux. Currently XmpManager is a very experimental software and it could not work as expected. The features implemented are minimal. Metadatas permit to attach more info to your files, ex. description, author, coordinates.. This datas are embedded in the image file, so you won't lose them even if you'll upload the image on a website or you will burn this image on a DVD
Wings 3D - subdivision modeler inspired by Nendo and Mirai from Izware. It is possible to assign materials, vertex color, UV coordinates and textures, but there will be improvements in those features before Wings goes 1.0.
DENIM - system that helps web site designers in the early stages of design. DENIM supports sketching input, allows design at different refinement levels, and unifies the levels through zooming
JPatch - spline based 3D modeling tool (a patch modeler). It can be used to create 3D models for POV-Ray or RenderMan® compatible renderers (e.g. Aqsis

Veejay - visual instrument and realtime video sampler It allows you to "play" the video like you would play a piano. While playing, you can record the resulting video directly to disk (video sampling). - Veejay can be used to manipulate video in a realtime environment i.e. 'VeeJay' for visual performances or for (automated) interactive video installations. See the Feature Overview and uses of Veejay for more information , jump to the Gallery or look at some Screenshots. Go to video sampling for information on loop based editing with Veejay.
KMediagrab - media grabber and encoder built on top of mplayer/mencoder. It can grab and encode a DVD at the same time (e.g., creating a divx or a videocd file for instance), record a movie or your favourite TV program from your TV-card, or translate a video file from one format to another (e.g., create a realplayer file from a .wmv one).
Coriander - Linux graphical user interface (GUI) for controlling a Digital Camera through the IEEE1394 bus (aka FireWire, or iLink). Coriander is full featured and besides changing the parameters of the camera it will also let you record video, send images to an FTP site, convert the video to a V4L stream,... A live display is of course provided too. Best of all, Coriander will work with any camera that is compatible with the IIDC specifications (also known as DCAM specs). This includes most 1394 webcams and a majority of industrial or scientific cameras too. However, any cameras in which you can insert a video tape (camcorders,...) will NOT work with coriander. These cameras record compressed DV video on the tape, while the IIDC specify uncompressed, on-the-fly video flows. If you wish to use a camcorder you should have a look at Kino instead.
gtranscode - GTK+ GUI (graphical use interface) front-end for transcode written in order to make this powerful tool easier to use. Transcode is a powerful video and audio processing tool that can read in just about any format of video and/or audio and convert to just as many different formats. In addition to transcode's extremely flexible modular concept for reading/writing different formats and codecs, it can apply filters, do re-sampling, resizing, cropping, and more. The cost from all this comes in the form of over 100 command line options which gtranscode aims to simplify.
gscanbus is a little bus scanning, testing and topology visualizing tool for the Linux IEEE1394 subsystem, with some AV/C support, especially for controlling Camcorders and VCRs. It is intended as a debugging tool for IEEE1394 development, but can also be used to simply check your IEEE1394 setup on Linux.
