Team customization

Registered by Niels G. W. Serup

To aid in "friend or foe recognition", team customizations are a must.

When creating a team, one should be able to choose between a variation of unique identificational objects to aid in recogition both before and especially during fighting. These variable objects should include, but probably not be limited to:

[*] A name
    "T34m 1337", "Team 50+", etc. are examples.

[*] Colors/patterns/a flag
Simple colors would make it easy to distinguish the enemy from one's team. So would pretty patterns and nice flags.
Flags from existing nations should generally not be used, as that might encourage people to communicate and play only with people from their own country, which would result in some people never realizing the possibility of playing with persons of other nations. Quite a lot of people do, however, only speak their own language, so creating a team with focus on a specific nationality might be a good idea in some cases, in which using a flag known to the player is of course acceptable. Disencouraging the use of real-life flags would also increase creativity.

[*] A slogan
A real team must have a slogan. Both poor ones such as "We are the winners!" and complex ones such as "Our team plays.." are examples.

[*] Turret customizations
While allowing players to use completely custom turrets might make playing difficult for the opponent, allowing some customization would spice an otherwise normally fun game up. By default, the colors of turrets should somehow resemble the colors used in general, team-wise.
Practically, turret customization should probably be limited to changing the shape from a circle to a square or something like that. It should be possible to choose different kinds of turrets from a list.

All identification-purpose objects should naturally have a bunch of standard values that could be chosen at random in the case of a team not specifying anything. Computer generated values should try to be the exact opposite of the enemy's, to increase recognition.

Whiteboard

Perhaps players should have the option to buy a flag for their poddie, instead of having one as default.

-----

I think flags should solely be used for identification purposes. It could be fun, however, if it was possible to buy the enemy's flag. This way, players could fool the enemy. If this were to be implemented, naturally it should be made so only the enemy would be fooled. Space comrades should still be able to see the original flag.
Then again, maybe flags aren't the answer. Colors and patterns on ships are probably more noticable than simple flags.
