Let the user choose which instance of an application to open

Registered by Peter K.

Most programs can be opened more than once (e.g. Chrome, mousepad). At times I have several instances (e.g. 5) of an editor (mousepad) running. If I click on the mousepad icon in the plank bar, every instance of the editor is brought up front.

This is inconvenient for two reasons:

1. If I want to switch back to another program which had the focus previously via ALT+TAB, one would expect it to be at place two in the stack. But since every instance was brought up front, one would need to ALT+TAB through every one of the five instances of the editor before getting to the previously focused application.

2. Since every one of the five instances are brought up front, every minimized instance of the application gets restored to its former size and position.

A solution would be to show all instances (with a preview, ideally) if the user clicks on the icon and more than one instance is running. Just like if you right click on the icon.

Maybe the above is desired behavior for some people. Therefore, a switch in the settings might be a good idea.
