Chunking character columns (a.k.a. char chunking) was and still is highly experimental. See http://code.google.com/p/maatkit/issues/detail?id=568

Bug 821688 and bug 821714 highlight the need to revisit char chunking because it really only works in ideal cases. If nothing else, a tool should have an option to disable char chunking.

I think we have to give up on chunking and use Nibble. This is what pt-archiver uses, by the way. It doesn't chunk at all. I think the Chunk Iterator blueprint should supercede this one, and this one should go away.
