We didn't have a reproducible test case for this bug. So we just reverted non-essential refactoring introduced in 5.5.18 as the most likely culprit.

It turns out it's an upstream issue after all: http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=64624, as I originally thought. At least the symptoms and affected versions are the same.
