Disabling the tabbar if only one tab

Registered by Andres Mendez

I think disabling the tabbar if only one tab would make it look a lot cleaner.

Agree, but where would the new tab option be then? --paulogalardi1
Is the new tab option even necessary? It opens Home by default, but I rarely use it. I just right click on the folders in the "Personal" column, or "Devices" that I do need. -Andres Mendez

I think obfuscating features like this runs counter to the principles that drive Elementary. If a significant feature like this is available, it should be apparent in the UI,

If the folder you want to open in a new tab isn't in the sidebar (and in my experience they often aren't), you would first have to open an arbitrary folder rather than just clicking the new tab button. If you have one tab open but want to access previously closed tabs, you would again have to right click and open an arbitrary folder in a new tab to regain access to the trash icon, and then close the tab you had to open just to reveal the trash icon. I don't think requiring users to take arbitrary actions or jump through hoops like this is ever a good idea. The thought of having to explain this process to my mother or my grandparents keeps me up at night.

This would also make Files the only Elementary app with a tab bar that behaves this way, lessening the OS's cohesiveness. At the end of the day, the tab bar is very clean the way it is and the amount of usable space gained by removing it when only one tab's open is insignificant, even on my tiny netbook screen.

I think this problem's existence is highly suspect, and the steps required to resolve it would be far more damaging to the user experience than letting it be.
