Option to enable desktop to use files

A lot of users does not use elementary OS due to the fact that they cannot use the desktop to place files, folders & icons.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Linux is about giving the user freedom of options. I love elementary and I would like to see this option.

The option could be integrated into the switchboard & I think it would be a great way to get more users to use elementary.
