Observation from libvte (via xfce4-terminal):
Only the characters currently on display matter; neither editing history nor formatting matters. It doesn't matter what cursor moves and edits caused those characters to be there.
URLs wrapped around line endings are still detected.
Scheme matters: `http` and `https` are recognised, `foobar://...` is not.
