Support serial Port is a bad idea, it work on linux but, not work on Mac and Windows
We (Syleam) use serial port on our Point of Sale (TouchScreen, MSR, etc..)
With GTK client, we use barcode scanner in Keyboard Wedge.
If DBUS is implement in the GTK client, i think it's possible to use it for received a scan barcode.
