JSON-RPC as lightweight mobile protocol

I am planning to try out a xml-rpc to json-rpc gateway service to take some load of mobile clients.
xml-rpc is in many cases to chunky to perform well on limited networks, and also on low memory devices.
My hope is that i can use already stable json template scripts (jquery or similar) to build a generic mobile browser client. This is possible thanks to the widespread implementation of more complete ajax, css and javascript support on mobile systems.
