Qemu > 1.3 is now able to directly address an image stored in a GlusterFS backend thanks to GlusterFS native support :

It would be great if Nova could take advantage of it, as benchmarks are showing huge I/O improvements

This could be either autodetected by Nova if instances_path is stored in a Gluster instance, or enabled thru nova.conf setting.
