A package system like macports to Mac OS X
As discussed in the following thread, each OS version of ubuntu have its own versions of packages. Older version ubuntu does not automatically have packages available in the new version. The problem seems to be that ubuntu does not separate a set of core packages vs a set of noncore packages.
I think that there might be something that can be learned from macports on Mac OS X. Mac OS provide a set of core utilities, macports are build on top of Mac OS. So macports can work on a variety version of Mac OS X, any updates in macports will be available on any version of Mac OS X where macports are installed.
The same paradigm can be applied to Ubuntu. I.e., the ubuntu OS provide a set of core utilities, whereas non essential packages are maintained independently from ubuntu core OS, as long there is some common interface between the two, the core OS and the non essential packages can be updated independently.
