If not enough space available, check .trash size and suggest deletion
In case of a typical "paste-file(s) situation", where the required space is not available (imagine a USB stick of rather small size to which yoou want to transfer files...), let Nautilus check for the .trash size of concern, namely the .trash folder of that medium. If that space and the- already available- disk space would allow for a paste operation. Suggest emptying the trash folder "on sight",... instead of
"File operation failed: Not enough space available", make it "Not enough space available. However, Nautilus detected that emptying your local trash would allow for this operation to be executed. Do you want Nautilus to empty that trash now? EMPTY - ABORT" ..something along those lines, mind you I never thought about the acutal phrasing of these words, neither am I a native speaker.
