A note that from my experience, quite a few high quality controllers use a pretty simple USB HID protocol, where button-presses are actually just single *bit* flips inside a message. That is to say, *all* buttons' states are described in a single USB HID message of a specific size, and identifying the changed bit from the previous message allows identifying that button.
LED feedback is more complex, but for HID-learn I presume that's out of scope anyway.
