Use XDG directories for storing/loading application data

I (mike) posted this to the list. All the major details should be included:

I just wanted to raise the question of where the memaker data dir should
be located. There's been a move to put stuff that used to live in
$HOME/.<appname> into .local/share/<appname>.

I'm wondering if memaker should be an app that signs on the the XDG Base
Directory spec:
