Click to rename

Registered by ttosttos

For many years, Nautilus has failed to support 'click to rename' on files/folders. This is close to be a 10-year request that has been ignored so far.

Whiteboard

IMHO click2rename is a stupid idea. One of the reasons for switching to Nautilus years ago was that it doesn't support click2rename. --shnatsel

I'd argue that you seem to be stating your personal preference and not the preference of the average user. My view is that, in general, users can initiate UI actions on a desktop in three different ways:
- mouse driven (click, drag, hover, etc)
- menu driven
- keystroke driven
My experience is that average users find mouse the most intuitive and keystroke the least intuitive. Today, users can right click and find the rename option in a context menu typically with 10+ entries or left-click and type F2. From the experience with other OSs, plus the Nautilus history with the bug referenced above, it is clear to me that a large number of users (if not most) would prefer click-to-rename. -- ttosttos
