[Debate] Improve The Process of Installing Lubuntu

Registered by amjjawad 

This is more of a Debate than just an idea. This debate (installation of Ubuntu and all its flavours) has been and still an endless discussion over each release. I think it is time to end this and find a solution or at least agree about what can 'we' do about this :)

Some members of the community think the current Installation Process (Ubiquity) is just pain in the neck for Newcomers and chances to do mistakes are high.

While I represent NO ONE BUT myself here, I do think the current installation Process is fine but whatever my friends and team mates think, I can't be late and will sure support them. Having that said, as a Lubuntu Team, let's come up with our own way FOR NOW at least and if we can actually manage to reach to some kind of agreement about that, other communities may adopt our idea later on but let's agree and end this debate once and for all :)

Idea #1: Create a YouTube Video that explains in details HOWTO install Lubuntu with all the available options. Add a link of that video to our website and our Wiki Area right next to the Download Link with a note:

"Please, make sure to backup your files and important data before anything else. Do not assume that Ubuntu GNOME will do it for you automatically. "

Idea #2: Improve the Text on Ubiquity - https://launchpad.net/~nio-wiklund 's suggestion

Today, there is another person, who misunderstood the partitioning
dialogue of the desktop installer.

It is really too bad, and something that should be improved in 14.04.
The alternatives must state clearly what will be wiped and or overwritten.

Idea #3: Write a very detailed document and make sure to post the link right next to the Download Link of Lubuntu with a note:

"Please, do read this before anything else".

Idea #4: ALL THE ABOVE.

What do you think?

Whiteboard

[nio] All actions to reduce the risk of losing data are valuable. Videos, wiki pages, warning text at the downloading sites. But above all, the text in the installer itself needs improvement, and it should not be too time-consuming to make such an improvement. Some people need to sit down and check what has been misunderstood and try to imagine what can be misunderstood by beginners. Those descriptions and instructions need to be rewritten. In a second step it is important to involve those who translate the text into all the languages. I'd volunteer to such a group.

[amjjawad] this is what I think it should be done: http://amjjawad.blogspot.com/2013/10/ubiquity-and-installing-ubuntu-and-its.html - that is all :)

[nio] A pop-up warning screen/window with a check-box would be the main alternative for me. It's not too intrusive and it would be easy to add. Every improvement at the wiki pages (warning texts and videos) will help reducing the risk of mistakes, so it is a 'both and situation' for me :-)
