help users choose which edition to download

When I got decided to choose mint, I went to the download page. Here, several editions are proposed. I chose the top one, mate, because 1) I new before coming to your website that is was renowned, and 2) it was on the top of the list.
However, I am still wondering if I made the good choice? I would appreciate to have along each edition the pros compared to others, to know what to choose. For example : mate is recommanded for general purpose, cinnamon is experimental and reserved to high performance machines, kde for (?), xfce for low performance machines (e.g machines from 2005 for example ?)... linux debian for (?). Or at least a color, a typo, a drawing, ... that shows the main/preferred edition. Also, I would feel more confident if I most of the linux mint community would mainly use 1 distro, because that would imply a more stable one. but which one is the main ?
