Better exception handling in mintUpdate

When something goes wrong, mintUpdate should detect it, show what is wrong to the user and its GUI should change to indicate it's not functioning properly. At the moment, the systray icon changes but not the main GUI. Also, the error should be visible in the logs, in the systray icon's tooltip, and somewhere in the GUI.
