Automatic Display Recognition (Single and Multi)

I see this in Windows and it is the one thing that sometimes has me return to the darkside for certain tasks.
If the user plugs in a second monitor (say, to their laptop), linux should automatically recognize that a second display is present and should adjust itself accordingly.
If the user unplugs that display, linux should then detect what monitors are available and display on the available monitors.
Too many times have I had to do a hard shut down because I pulled the display cable out before switching the displays in "Monitors".
