A custom window manager in Cinnamon (or Cinnamon2D)

Registered by Carlos Lopez

Cinnamon comes with a window manager and a beautiful panel/control center. I would like to use a window manager of my choosing.
I realize cinnamon-settings assumes that the window manager is part of cinnamon and I wonder what are your thoughts on separating panel, settings and window management into different libraries/binaries.

From linuxmint/cinnamon-control-center/README on github:

 > "One of these two tools need to be removed from the default installation and discontinued in the scope of the Cinnamon project. The other one needs to be able to load all modules, whether they're GNOME modules or Cinnamon settings modules."

Has the team decided which one of both is going to be the discontinued?

From linuxmint/Roadmap/README on github:

 > "- Rethink Cinnamon 2D, fallback to a non-shadow CPU-less intensive session in software rendering mode and/or Muffin/OpenBox (whatever happens, the user should know he's not running the "real" Cinnamon, he should be told why, and he should find himself with a working WM (even a minimalistic one like OpenBox))."

Where can I keep me posted and grasp on future/current work and previous work? I could not find any devlopment mailing list
