Active Hidden Background Programs

I think it would be pretty awesome to somehow pin programs to the top, buttom, or notification bar to be minimized and off my currently massively cluttered task bar, so I can keep the programs running, but in the background. So i dont have to search the menu everytime I need to access said program. Kinda like a dock, but without closing the programs, and only for actively running programs.
