Linux RT Kernel for Ubuntu

Registered by Kaj Ailomaa

The Ubuntu Studio team would again like to introduce linux-rt as an option for the audio enthusiasts.

linux-lowlatency is a good choice for most, and is probably the best default kernel, so linux-rt will most likely not be default in Ubuntu Studio.
Or, we ship both, and the user can decide on the kernel during boot-time.

Whiteboard

Test build exists at https://launchpad.net/~ubuntustudio-kernel/+archive/linux-rt-testbuilds. It's a direct import from Debian repositories. Needs to be tested with Ubuntu.

Importing a kernel from Debian isn't going to fly here, if you want it to sanely fit in with an Ubuntu system. What you really want is to isolate RT patches, and apply them to an Ubuntu flavour package, like the old lowlatency was before we absorbed it. -- infinity

Considering that the development of the rt patch may end within this year, getting it merged upstream with the vanilla kernel, getting the -rt kernel in is a low priority right now - http://lwn.net/Articles/572740/.

Also, interesting - http://embeddedenea.com/2014/03/17/speculations-on-real-time-linux-future/
