Experiment with S8C1T

A lot of keyboard input handling would be much nicer if we knew we definitely had S8C1T enabled.
Before setting that though it would be nice to perform some experimentation with various terminals and see what works and what doesn't. Also the ever-pesky screen and tmux need to be tested too.
