Use the COLORTERM environment variable

There is a growing standard to use the COLORTERM environment variable to indicate ability to provide 24bit colour support:

Further thoughts: having the driver read an env. var. feels like the wrong solution. The entire abstraction mechanism gets broken then; it is reaching directly to local values that might not apply in remote cases.
