You can zoom with:
1. Ctrl+wheel to zoom in and out.
2. Middlebutton to zoom in and Shift+middlebutton to zoom out.
3. Ctrl+right bouton to zoom in and Shift+right bouton to zoom out.
4. +/- to zoom in and out.

1, 2 and 3 focus to the pointer, 4 to the center of the view.

Thus you can either use the first three, with your pointer on the selected object, or 4, after having centered the canvas to the selection (View>Zoom>Selection).

Anyway, the blueprints part is for more complex feature specifications. If you just need to lock the zoom tool to the selection, could you please file a new report in the bug zone (we'll give it a Wishlist status)?
