In text mode, either right click on a position in a text object, or, with cursor active, a menu command under the Text menu, will split the text object into two independent text objects such that both together look the same as the one before, and switch to select mode, with both objects selected.

2010-05-03 Update: the 'Split Text' extension has been added to Inkscape trunk in revision 9360 (i.e. will be included in Inkscape 0.48).

2016-05-03 in version 0.91 (the current stable) Extensions menu > Text > Split text.
