Improved gradient editing

Registered by Tim Hoffmann

At the top of the gradient editor there is a color bar displaying the gradient. It would be really helpful to make this an active UI element, i.e.
- display the stop positions
- display the currently edited stop
- allow to change the currently edited stop by clicking on the color bar
- optionally even move stop positions (offset) with the mouse

[2012-02-11 ~suv] Note: the gradient editor dialog is considered deprecated and to be fully replaced with the (existing) gradient tool.

Most of your requested features are already possible on-canvas with the gradient tool (≠ gradient editor dialog): see <http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Attributes-Fill-Stroke.html#Attributes-Gradients-Define-Onscreen> for details. What is currently lacking the most in the gradient tool is numeric control over the tab stop positions (though they can be easily positioned with snapping e.g. to grid and guides, or other snap targets). There are also some known focus issues when editing the gradients of overlapping objects (see bug tracker).

Please read <http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.graphics.inkscape.devel/37724> for a recent discussion about improving on-canvas editing of gradients and adding additional options to the controls bar of the gradient tool (≠ gradient editor dialog), as well as other earlier threads in the archives of the mailing list.

[2012-03-13 ~suv] Bug #950677 "Gradient toolbar enhancements / disable gradient editor <https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/950677> tracks the progress for adding missing options to the gradient tool controls bar and disabling the deprecated 'Gradient Editor' dialog (once all its features and use cases have been migrated to the gradient tool and its controls bar).

There are no plans to keep and enhance the old dialog as proposed in this blueprint.

Tools to manage existing gradient definitions (merging similar ones, renaming or deleting existing ones, etc.) will likely be added to the 'Fill & Stroke' dialog, as proposed in Bug #722017 "UI - Better Gradient Window " <https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/722017>

[2012-04-12] The migration to on-canvas editing with the gradient tool, with additional options on the tool controls bar has been committed to trunk, and the deprecated gradient editor dialog has been disabled from within the gradient tool (all features are now more easily accessible from within the tool, without depending on an additional dialog).

See <https://plus.google.com/108911244660285152681/posts/CVtaSvmxssY> for a screenshot (the feature will be available in Inkscape 0.49).

IMHO this blueprint should be closed (improved gradient editing is implemented, but not based on the deprecated dialog as described here).
