Checkerboard pattern as background for document when the document's background color is transparent.

Just wondering if it would be a good idea to make the document background a checkerboard pattern like most graphics applications out there. Not only do people know what it does, i.e. they expect transparency for the canvas/document to be shown as a checkerboard pattern.
