Weird. I've tested again on my dev computer (Ubuntu 9.04, Inkscape from SVN), it the old version work fine, even with French accents...
So it doesn't work on XP (SVN) and Ubuntu 9.04 (pre0.0 from PPA), but works fine on OS X and Ubuntu 9.04 (SVN).
Since the new version seems to work everywhere, it's probably safe to commit it anyway.
