More Image Metadata

Is it worth storing somewhat more image metadata in our images? I (tgd) have sometimes wanted to put information about z-position the image was captured, exposure time, laser power, etc in with an image. Not all of that information belongs in the optics, do we need to think about some larger image metadata paradigm?
