This game is sexist

Registered by Nelson do Vale

Many people have argued that the game is sexist.
This has happended on forums and also in Debian suggested games page.

It is important to discuss:
Is the game really offensive?
Does the game suggests women are somewhat less than men?
Does the game suggests women have differente roles or tastes than men? If so, are the suggestions either false of somehow evil?
If there are moral issues with this game, is it possible to fix the game or should the project be discontinued?

Whiteboard

Some remarks were made about the sexist content of this game.

Let's try to make this issue clear.

What is sexist about it?
- Remark: one should not state that a game if made for girls
-- Is that really so? Is it wrong to have a target audience? Is it wrong to say who the target audince is?
--- The game was really developed aiming young girls. This remark seams to state that one should not have a targeted audience, or that having a targeted audience is offensive. All games have targeted audiences. Soccer games are target on europeans and south american young male adults. That does not mean women should no play.
-- We do mean to make it easy for parents or relatives to find the game when searching for something for their kids to play.. The goal of saying "this is a game for girls" was to make it easier for people to find it if they are looking for something for a little girl.

Is it a problem if this game is sexist?
- Ideologies and values conflicts with one another. It is not possible to please everyone.
- Sexism is not something clearly definable. It is sexist to arrest women because they are studying. It is sexist to say that lipstick is a female product. These are two completely different actions.
- It is not good to be offensive. If the game is offensive because of its so called sexist content and it is worthy to do something about it, we should do it.

Is the game offensive?
- The people who made the remarks seem not to have played the game.
- It seems that the game content is much more "sexist" than the game description.
- If these people should ever play the game, they would probably be much more offended.
- Here are some reasons someone could call the game "sexist" or "stereotype promoter":
* the game stars a female character that seeks to find the perfect outfit for the Ball
* the character is a princess
* the character must avoid getting dirty to be clean at the ball
* the character wins the hearts of the noble man in the ball if she does not repeat outfits and is clean
* the hearts won in the Ball follow the nobility hierarchy from bottom up
* [spoil alert] do not read the next sentence if you like the game and want to play it to the end to find out what happens to the princess.
she finds her true love who was not the E. A., but Fabrizio

Should the game be changed because of its sexist content?
- This is indeed a very difficult question. It is not our purpose to offend anyone. People seemed very offended in a blog, a forum and an important wiki page.
- On the other hand, the argument is very weak.
-- It seems that the argument that the game is sexist presuposes:
---- that there is something wrong in trying to look good, or in balls or in trying to win the hearts of important people.
---- that girls should not like things that they do actually like today (e.g. dresses and dancing)
---- that it is offensive to say that a product targets a certain audience.
---- that boys who may like the game would not play it because we said it is for girls, while that does not seem to be the case when the genders are switched.
---- It seems to be the case that women should be more offended by the claim that it it is offensive to say something was made for them.
---- To say that a hair product, a certain color of dress or a skin product aims black people is not offensive (is it?), than why is it offensive to say that a game about a young princess aims little girls?

Would it help to alert that the game may be offensive and that people with feminist views should not allow or encourage their children to play the game?

We will take no further action on this issue. We should resume development focusing on important things. People who don't like the game should simply not play it.
