Improve test for plot type

The Viper test for the plot type should be improved.
Options:
1. If Viper would accept the plot type as an argument, and error could be thrown if the the type cannot be plotted. Presently, Viper will simply fall back to a mesh plot which means that bugs are not picked up.
2. Test for XML tags on plot file
More diagnostics should be added to help trace back problems.
