A large topographical view of the surrounding area. What determines an "area" will need to be investigated, perhaps a paged region of terrain, a preset boundry, or perhaps most easily set as a specific region relative to the avatar entity's location. The rendered texture should derived from few layers ( configurable ), so that eventually there can be a snapshot of the texture for the terrain, a static stencil for points of interest, and a dynamic layer for game data ( avatar/entity locations etc )

This is very much dependent on the minimap. The larger map should in essence just be a larger view of the minimap, so they both share the same layers and whatnot.
